On 13 January 2026, Mr. Nguyen Khac Toan, Chairman of the Hue City People’s Committee, signed the decision granting in-principle investment approval for the construction of Wharf No. 6 at Chan May Port, located within the Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone in central Vietnam with a total investment of 928 billion VND (35.3 million USD). The project will provide essential cargo handling, storage, transportation, and related logistics support services to the city.
The project will span more than 15.5 hectares, comprising over 13.2 hectares of land and nearly 2.3 hectares of water surface. Key components include: (1) one deep-water wharf capable of accommodating general cargo, container, bulk, and liquid cargo vessels up to 70,000 DWT; (2) two additional wharfs for vessels of up to 10,000 DWT; (3) associated technical infrastructure, warehouses, and yards; and (4) machinery and equipment to facilitate import and export operations through the port.
The approval comes as Hue City prioritizes the reinforcement and upgrading of Chan May Port’s infrastructure, particularly in the aftermath of severe storms and flooding in late 2025 that affected port operations. Strengthening capacity is part of broader efforts to increase the resilience and competitiveness of the port system against climate-related risks.
Chan May Port’s deep-water characteristics and strategic location between Hue and Da Nang City position it as a vital logistics hub in central Vietnam. The port’s multimodal connectivity is strengthened by its proximity to Phu Bai International Airport (approximately 40 km) and Da Nang International Airport (about 35 km), enhancing access for freight and business flows.
In the context of the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), Chan May Port provides one of the closest and most efficient gateway to the regional maritime trading route[1]. Its development is, therefore, significant for not only domestic logistics but also for international trade routes linking central Vietnam with southern Laos, northeastern Thailand, and Myanmar. BIC in Ho Chi Minh City agrees that, monitoring the development of Wharf No. 6 at Chan May Port is strategically important for Thai investors, as it directly affects logistics costs, trade routes along the EWEC, and business opportunities in port-related services and regional supply chains opportunities in central Vietnam.
