Ho Chi Minh City Expands Its Public Transport Network with Electric Bicycles

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) plans to introduce 500 electric bicycles into its public transport system, with operations expected to commence before 17 February 2026. The initiative aims to expand green mobility options and improve first- and last-mile connectivity with buses and metro lines.

These electric bicycles are equipped with pedals-assisted electric motors and swappable batteries, which can be replaced at designated stations across the network. When battery levels run low, the warning signals will alert users to return the bicycle for battery exchange. If a replacement is not immediately possible, the bicycles can still operate as conventional pedal bicycles, ensuring the continuity of travel.

The proposed rental fees for electric bicycles are set at 20,000VND for 30 minutes, 35,000VND for 60 minutes, and 65,000VND for 120 minutes. Users can scan a QR code on the bicycle via the TNGO or Zalo applications to register, unlock, and use the service, following a model similar to the existing public bicycle service.

HCMC launched its public bicycle system in late 2021; however, conventional bicycles have proven less suitable for faster or longer trips. The addition of electric bicycles is therefore expected to enhance flexibility, diversify public transport options, and support the city’s green transport development objectives, as well as strengthen connectivity with bus and metro stations in the coming period.

In addition, HCMC has recently put into operation a priority bicycle lane along Mai Chi Tho Boulevard, making an initial step toward establishing a dedicated cycling lane network to encourage greater integration between cycling and public transport.
