On 12 November 2025, the seminar “Developing Sustainable Seaports and Airports” was held as part of the visit by the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, aiming to explore cooperation opportunities and propose solutions for expanding and modernizing seaport and aviation infrastructure.
According to Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) People’s Committee, the city is accelerating the development and modernization of the Cai Mep–Thi Vai Port and the Can Gio International Transshipment Port to become Vietnam’s largest international transshipment hub of regional and global significance. In the aviation sector, Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports are positioned as key gateways forming an integrated air–water–land network, supporting the city’s ambition to become a leading aviation and logistics hub in Southeast Asia.
In line with global sustainability standards and Vietnam’s Net Zero 2050 commitment, HCMC is addressing challenges related to infrastructure, multimodal connectivity, and digital and green transition. The city aims to develop smart and green ports and airports, which integrate technological innovation with environmental sustainability. Key solutions include: adopting electric barges, already successfully deployed in the Netherlands; (2) developing efficient and stable green charging systems for transport vehicles; and (3) establishing a green logistics corridor, such as the proposed Cai Mep–Rotterdam Green Corridor, based on unified data-sharing standards.
Dutch experts emphasized integrating sustainability from the earliest stages of airport planning, highlighting electrification, solar energy, and electric vehicles as key future trends. HCMC seeks to learn from Dutch experience in planning, operations, technology transfer, and human resource development, and to explore applying the Amsterdam Schiphol “airport city” model at Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh international airports.
The city reaffirms its commitment to a transparent and investor-friendly environment, promoting digital transformation, green growth, and public-private partnerships (PPP) to attract investment in seaport, aviation, and logistics infrastructure.
