On 22 September 2025, the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence[1] released the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2020-2024, a global benchmark assessing port efficiency in handling vessel calls. The index is based on a robust dataset of over 175,000 vessel calls and 247 million container movements, with total vessel’s time in port serving as one of the key indicators of operational efficiency. This year’s CPPI also introduces, for the first time, a multi-year trend analysis, offering deeper insights into the development of individual ports over the past five years. This addition provides a valuable perspective on whether port performance has improved, declined, or remained stable over time.
In this year’s rankings, Cai Mep Port placed 7th among 403 container and cluster ports worldwide, surpassing several well-known hubs, including Hong Kong (12th), Yokohama (16th), and Singapore (29th). Meanwhile, Hai Phong Port ranked 30th, marking a notable improvement of 40 positions and emerging as one of the world’s strongest improving ports. In comparison, Laem Chabang and Bangkok ports placed 41st and 261st respectively due to long average vessel’s time in port (ranging from 23 hours for smaller vessels up to 69.3 hours for large vessels).
Previously, Lloyd’s List[2] ranked Ho Chi Minh City Port, Hai Phong Port, and Cai Mep Port among the Top 100 most vibrant container ports in 2025. With total container throughput exceeding 23.2 million TEU in 2024, Vietnam now ranks 6th globally in container port traffic after China, US, Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia.
