The Vietnam Power Development Corporation (VNPD) is investing over 304 million USD to develop a new 150 MW biomass power plant in Vinh Trinh Commune, Can Tho City, supporting the green economic transition of the Mekong Delta Region. The project covers approximately 24 hectares of land (including 0.5 hectares of water), and is aligned with both the National Power Development Plan (PDP) and the Can Tho City Development Master Plan (2021-2030).
The project will utilize advanced Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler technology for multi-biomass combustion that meets current environmental standards. It will require an annual supply of over 700,000 tonnes of agricultural by-products, primarily rice husk and straw, sourced within a 30 km radius. Operationally, the plant will minimize environmental impact, as post-combustion ash can be repurposed as construction material or bio-fertilizer.
The project is expected to create over 200 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities in fuel logistics and support services, fostering regional socio-economic development. In addition, the project will reduce Can Tho City’s annual CO₂ emissions by over 560,000 tonnes, aligning with Vietnam’s 2050 Net Zero commitment
