On 21 January 2026, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) congratulated Can Tho City for ranking fifth nationwide in seafood export value. According to VASEP, despite significant challenges faced by the industry, Vietnam’s seafood export turnover in 2025 surpassed 11 billion USD for the first time, representing a 12.4% year-on-year increase. Shrimp remained the country’s leading export product, generating 4.6 billion USD (up 19%) and accounting for 41% of total export value, while pangasius exports reached 2.2 billion USD, up 7.5%.
In 2025, Can Tho City recorded over 97,000 hectares of aquaculture area, with total output reaching nearly 783,000 tons, an increase of 2.81% year-on-year. The city’s seafood processing and export activities continued to demonstrate positive growth momentum, with export turnover in 2025 estimated at 2.1 billion USD. These results reaffirm aquaculture as a key production sector of Can Tho City’s economy.
BIC in Ho Chi Minh City views that the continued expansion of the seafood industry, the strengthened production capacity, aquaculture efficiency, and processing capabilities in Can Tho City may further enhance Vietnam’s export competitiveness in major markets such as the United States, the European Union, and China. At the same time, developments in the region may also present opportunities for Thailand to cooperate with Vietnam in related sectors such as aquaculture, seafood processing, and logistics, areas in which Thai companies have experience and potential to engage further with partners in both Can Tho City and the broader Mekong Delta region.
